A chatbot answers; an AI agent acts. A chatbot replies to messages, while an agent can take steps — look something up, call a tool, complete a task — to reach a goal. The more your task involves doing, not just saying, the more you want an agent.
What a chatbot is
A chatbot has a conversation: it understands a message and responds, optionally pulling an answer from a knowledge base. It's perfect for support, FAQs and guiding people to the right place. It doesn't take actions on its own.
What an AI agent is
An agent is given a goal and can choose steps to reach it: query a database, call an API, fill a form, or chain several tools together. 'It decides for itself' means it picks which tool to use and when — within limits you set.
Side by side
| Chatbot | AI agent | |
|---|---|---|
| Core job | Answer | Act toward a goal |
| Tools | Usually none | Calls tools/APIs |
| Best for | Support, FAQ | Multi-step automation |
| Cost & risk | Lower | Higher — needs guardrails |
Which to order
If you need to answer questions, a chatbot is cheaper, simpler and safer. If you need work done across systems, an agent earns its complexity — with approval steps for anything irreversible.
