For a private business VPN, three protocols dominate. WireGuard is fastest and simplest, OpenVPN is the flexible veteran, and IPsec/IKEv2 has native support on every device. The right one depends on devices, performance and compatibility.
WireGuard — fast and modern
A modern protocol with a tiny, audited codebase. Excellent speed, quick reconnects (great on mobile) and simple configuration. The default choice for new private networks unless something specific rules it out.
OpenVPN — flexible veteran
Battle-tested and highly configurable, OpenVPN works almost anywhere and can run over ports that slip through restrictive firewalls. It's heavier and a bit slower than WireGuard, but its flexibility still wins in tricky environments.
IPsec/IKEv2 — native everywhere
Built into Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, so clients connect without extra software. Strong and stable, especially for always-on device connections. Configuration is more involved than WireGuard.
Which to choose
| Protocol | Strength | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| WireGuard | Speed, simplicity | New networks, mobile |
| OpenVPN | Flexibility | Restrictive firewalls |
| IPsec/IKEv2 | Native clients | No extra app wanted |
